Interesting Fact: While the glycolytic system produces energy relatively quickly, it’s less efficient than the oxidative system and can lead to muscle fatigue if relied upon for too long. However, it’s crucial for activities like a 400-meter sprint or a high-rep set of squats.

The Oxidative System

The oxidative system, also known as the aerobic system, is the body’s primary energy source for sustained, low to moderate-intensity activity, such as long-distance running or cycling. This system relies on oxygen to produce ATP through the breakdown of carbohydrates, fats, and proteins.

Surprising Statistic: The oxidative system can produce 36-38 molecules of ATP from one molecule of glucose, making it the most efficient energy system, albeit slower than the phosphagen and glycolytic systems. This efficiency is why it supports endurance activities like marathon running or cycling over extended periods.

Understanding how these energy systems work is crucial for designing effective training programs. Each sport or activity places different demands on the body’s energy systems, and strength and conditioning coaches must tailor their training protocols accordingly.
